Purposes for our discussion: 1) To experience the book on a deeper level by sharing your thoughts and questions about it, and 2) To use the book to expand our thinking about human rights issues. 3) To continue to learn how to discuss important issues in a moo format 4:15-4:30 Log on and chat in any room 4:30-4:55 Round #1: Discussion of Novel Discuss topics and passages from the books. Come with your topics ready and passages marked with sticky notes and/or have handwritten notes so that you'll be able to easily recall what you wanted to discuss. NOTE: Work together to decide how to proceed. 4:55-5:05: Break 5:05-5:25: Discuss the following topics: 1) How does the book increase your knowledge or appreciation for human rights issues? 2) What are some human rights concerns that you observe in your school or your community today? 3) What do you think might be the root of those problems? 5:25-5:45: Collaborative Found Poem 1) Each of you should bring with you or mark the following from your book: a) 1-2 lines that describe acts of intolerance or oppression b) 1-2 lines that highlight overcoming such acts (e.g. lines about the human spirit or resilience) 2) Discuss the lines in your chat space, not in the notes space. See what needs to be done to make the lines poetic (deleting unnecessary words, re-arranging the lines) and to represent the human rights statement your book can make through this poem. 3) Decide how your group will write the finished poem in the notes space. 5:45-6:00: Round #2 1) Read and discuss the poem you find in the Notes space. 2) As you make your observations, decide together what feedback you will give the group who wrote the poem. Here are some ideas for your discussion and feedback: What does the poem say to you? What is its effect on you? If it is written about the same book you read, comment on the way it represents the book to you. What about the choices the students made in selecting phrases and lines to include? Were their choices poetic? 3) One person should write the feedback in the Notes space below the poem. Put your names under the comment. 6:00: Reflection |
