and you will take a trip back in time to learn about each decade. This unit is a popular tradition for our team. Teachers and students alike enjoy the fun of mixing decade history and culture with science fiction. Science Fiction is a strong literary from that has found wide appeal not only in written form, but also in visual form. The number of science fiction books published each year may only be exceeded by the number of science fiction movies and TV shows produced each year. Science fiction is heavily influenced by the events of the decade in which it was written, so knowing more about the structures of those decades helps in understanding the story better. Students read stories from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. The goal of this unit is for students to have a better understanding about events occurring in the world during those decades of the last century, and to be able to apply that knowledge to a science fiction novel written in that decade. To meet this need math, civics, and science classes all contribute to students' understanding of science fiction. Civics- In civics students will review major events in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. Students will then focus in particular on the decade in which their novel was written. Science- In science classes students will explore scientific inventions and discoveries from the decade in which their novel was written. Math-. Students will take information they have gathered from surveys and interviews about their decade to create spreadsheet charts and graphs. English- In English students will explore science fiction writing, define the genre, read a science fiction novel from a particular decade, and keep track of information from the novel on charts. They will also analyze advertising from their decade.
