About the FALL 2005 Varsity Season... Blacksburg Volleyball began it's season under second year head coach Karl Lippa. Coming off a difficult loss the previous season to Salem in the district semi-finals, the Lady Bruins were ready to pick off where they left off. Although the full team was not able to practice together for the first 4 weeks due to injury, Blacksburg still posted an impressive out of district record highlighted by defeating State Semi-Finalist Brookville H.S. at the William Byrd Invitational. The first district match was at defending State Runner-Up Cave Spring H.S. in which Blacksburg lost two very close games. Some redemention was reached as Blacksburg defeated long time district foe Salem three times in one season with the final win ending Salem's season. Blacksburg finished tied for second with Hidden Valley H.S. with a 7-3 record in district play. Hidden Valley won the coin toss; so Blacksburg began the River Ridge Tournament as the #3 seed. After lossing to Hidden Valley in 5 games in the district semi-finals, Blacksburg defeated Salem in the consolation game advancing to the regional tournament. This was the first time Blacksburg Volleyball had been to the Region Tournament in TEN YEARS! Hosting the first round of the regional tournament, Blacksburg defeated Liberty H.S. in four games. The long, fulfilling season came to an end at the hands of Lord Botetourt in the Regional Quarterfinals where Blacksburg lost 15-13 in the fifth and deciding game. Although the loss was tough, the Lady Bruins had a TREMENDOUS season and graciously walked back into the gym receiving a standing ovation from friends and family. Blacksburg ended an amazing season with a 17-8 overall record! Coach Lippa would like to thank the 7 senior players and parents for all of their hard work, dedication, and support over the past years at Blacksburg. THANK YOU!!! About the FALL 2004 Varsity Season... (How do 13 players hold 14 volleyballs when they have to move as a unit??) Under the direction of first year head coach Karl Lippa, the Blacksburg Volleyball program got off to a tremendous start. The Lady Bruins tied for first place in Pool Play at the Jefferson Forest Volleyball Tournament, along the way beating regional power Lord Botetourt. Prior to beginning district play, the Lady Bruins establised a record of 8 wins with only 1 loss [coming to Franklin County at the JF Tournament]. District play began with a tough battle at two-time defending state champion Cave Spring H.S. Despite losing the first match of district play, the Lady Bruins finished in 3rd place in the River Ridge District behind Cave Spring and Salem. The district tournament began as Christiansburg H.S. came to visit Blacksburg in the opening round of the tournament. Blacksburg's victory set up a rematch with #2 Salem. Both meetings between Salem and Blacksburg were decided in the deciding fifth game by a TOTAL of 5 points between the matches, with Salem winning both. Well, not to dissapoint the spectators, Blacksburg and Salem split the first four games to set up the final game 5. Despite a great effort by Blacksburg, Salem slipped by with their third victory over Blacksburg in the fifth game (again). Blacksburg ended it's first year under Coach Lippa & Staff with an impressive 15-6 overall record. The Lady Bruins were led by three amazing seniors who will all be greatly missed for their talent and leadership! Next fall, Blacksburg Volleyball will continue to reach a higher level of volleyball! COME OUT AND SUPPORT BLACKSBURG VOLLEYBALL IN THE 2006 FALL SEASON! |
