EDCI 4424 Literature for the Adolescent
In this course students experience a variety of approaches to teaching literature in the classroom: whole group, small group, individual, and online instruction and interaction. They study the characteristics and needs of adolescents both through class readings and research and through participation in a mentoring project with a local adolescent student. They design activities to enhance reading comprehension, response, and analysis. In each task, special attention is given to integrating the language arts. Students also explore current and historical theoretical and practical issues in the teaching of literature to adolescents, including conflicting paradigms of literary criticism and censorship. Work samples are posted online and all work is compiled in a portfolio.
